Karoonda East Murray (District Council)
The Karoonda / East Murray District Council serves a 4,400km2 area with a widely dispersed population of 1,323 persons. The council area is well served with many community service and sporting clubs. The Mayor and seven Councillors represent the wards. The council recognises both statutory and discretionary duties in providing services and governing the safety, health and environmentally responsible action of residents.
The area is rich in history and the visitor can see preserved machinery, rail rolling-stock and natural history along the nature trail and bushwalk. Karoonda is centrally located for access to the extensive and unique mallee scrub in Billiatt Conservation Park. The landscape undulates over remnant dune systems and offers wide vistas of pasture and breaks of native vegetation.
Karoonda and the area have grown up with the broad-acre farming of wheat and extensive sheep grazing. The Big Ram sculpture pays homage to the association of the area with the history of sheep farming.
Karoonda / East Murray District Council hosts the annual Mindarie Halidon Race meeting, the Karoonda Farm Fair, the Karoonda Agricultural & Horticultural Show and the Karoonda Australian Music Festival.
