District Council of Karoonda East Council

“District Council Karoonda East Murray is predominantly dryland agriculture, largely based on traditional broadacre grain and wool. New horticultural opportunities are opening up as fossil water becomes available, although the long-term effect of the use of this non-renewable resource is little mentioned. Similarly to other smaller councils in the region, there are no large service centres within the District Council Karoonda East Murray area, so while residents prefer to shop locally wherever possible, limited provision of health and education services in smaller communities, and poor viability of smaller farms forces many residents to commute for work (off farm income is essential to financial sustainability) shopping, agricultural machinery and supplies, banking, and health and education services. New investment in mining is expected to have noticeable flow-on effects to the regional community and broader economy." KPPM/DPD,SEIR REPORT JANUARY 2007
